What is a wake?

A wake is a gathering of family and friends that occurs after someone has died. It is usually held in the days leading up to the funeral or memorial service and can take place at the home of the deceased, a funeral home, or another location. The purpose of a wake is to allow people to come together to share memories and offer condolences to the family. In some cultures, wakes may involve rituals such as prayer or the lighting of candles. Food and drink are often served at a wake as a sign of hospitality and respect. Wakes may also be referred to as visitations, calling hours, or viewings.
